Before the year gets much older, I hope that you will take some time to position your HVAC business for success in 2012.

Here are just 3 examples of areas within your business that you need to address now, early in the year:

1. Staffing – do you have the right people in the right positions to move their careers and your company forward?

2. Systems – are your operational systems clean, easy to follow, and effective?

3. Efficiency – are your environments, vehicles, and equipment in good working order, and ready to to make your team members productive as well your company profitable?

There are many more areas of your business that will require attention, if you want to be successful.

It was a long day, but I had a blast working with the local radio station dj’s and guests. Best of all, I got to give back to the community; we surpassed our goal of $30,000…by $7,000. Next year…look out!

There was some publicity for my company, as well, in the form of “thank yous” and a few announcements. Do I expect to get any new customers from this initiative? That’s not why I did it…but additional name recognition never hurts.

What community charitable event can you reach into and make a difference?

In an effort to raise $30,000 to support guest families who turn to the Ronald McDonald House as a home-away-from-home when their child is hospitalized in nearby Dayton Children’s Medical Center, McAfee Heating and Air Conditioning, the Medical Center, Mix 107.7 and WDTN have teamed up on the 3rd annual Radiothon.

Listeners can help support the Radiothon by turning into Mix 107.7 and WDTN on September 29th and spreading the word to their friends, coworkers and families.

During the 13 hour broadcast, I, along with Mix 107.7 hosts will interview guest families and Radiothon supporters to promote the mission of serving families with hospitalized babies and children for more than 30 years.

Will you join me in supporting health, care and comfort for families in need? As a special challenge, I will match your call-in contributions, dollar-for-dollar, up to a maximum of $10,000 for the day. Call in during the broadcast, call-in and ask for me. I’d love to talk with you, and double your donation!

What plans and strategies do you have in place for the upcoming season? Here are a few things to keep in mind as we move into colder months:

1. Review your schedule. Be proactive and complete preventative maintenance work before “emergency” weather strikes, so you will have room for timely responses to service requests.

2. Plan NOW for bad weather days. Make sure your team understands your expectations and knows exactly what to do when weather makes geting to work and completing work difficult.

3. Ensure that your fleet is ready to respond to the weather: tires must be in good condition, proper winterization, and all in good working order.

4. Tune up your team.  It’s always a great time to train and educate your team.

Just wrapping up a great week in Indianapolis. In addition to working on the show floor, I enjoyed leading a seminar on Wednesday and Thursday. We experienced  a great turn out for both seminar sessions and had lots of conversations with other HVAC professionals.

Coaching strategies that made a big impact when I shared them this week:

1. Quit touching things.

2. Inspect what you expect.

3. Think from the neck up.
